PAT testing, or Portable Appliance Testing (also known as in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment), is the process of examining portable electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are safe to use. It typically involves a combination of visual inspections—checking for damage to plugs, leads, casings, or connections—and electrical tests using specialised PAT equipment to measure aspects like earth continuity, insulation resistance, and polarity, helping to identify faults that could lead to electric shocks, fires, or other hazards.
